winter mix 09

What better way to beat the winter doldrums than to participate in a music swap with other audiophiles around the country? A friend of mine in San Francisco, Amie Leeking, proposed a winter mix cd swap among 6 friends of hers. One mix is new songs we like, and one is old classics/personal favorites. In February, I am receiving 10 mixes from mostly strangers, from NYC to SF to Tennessee, a sure way to both learn about new music, and combat the mid-winter blues that accompany some of us here in Portland, OR. For my mix I'm including songs by Santogold, the Antony, Hercules and Love Affair, the New Bloods, and Chromatics.

A bit too much thinking about that map of the internet has resulted in these: classy new Plazm Desktop Wallpapers. Find your screen resolution below, and discover the cosmos in wonderfully pixelated 72 dpi. Don't scale the image to fit! It just won't look as good. I promise.

FM3 Buddha Machine

For the holidays this year Josh got me a FM3 Buddha Machine; a small plastic box that emits 9 different, continuous, calming drones. I have to say, it is remarkably soothing. Photoshop misbehaving? No biggie. Recession got you down? What, me worry? Just tune into the never ending soothing soundwaves of the FM3.

We'll see how long it takes to drive my coworkers crazy. Thomas usually likes to listen to Black Sabbath. Learn more about the Buddha Machine here.

Two new photography features

I had the honor of being one of this year's judges for the annual Photolucida competition. There were hundreds of amazing images from around the world. Of those, a few really struck me. I have been interviewing a handful of these artists and we are featuring some of their work along with the interviews on the Plazm magazine web site. The first two are up there now. Christina Seely's Lux project, documenting human-made light and what that light represents is truly beautiful. Meanwhile, Finnish photographer Harri Pälviranta documents the violence taking place in his former home town of Turku, finding the shocking is often completely banal.
