Old Masters & New Psychedlia Still on View at The Cooley

The Language of the Nude: Four Centuries of Drawing the Human Body
Psychedelic Soul: Contemporary Responses to the Masters

Rarely traveled, now is a great opportunity to see a deep collection of master drawings from the Crocker Art Museum.

In a beautiful juxtaposition, curator Stephanie Snyder has included a room of video portraits by Antoine Catala. These works inform one another in a compelling manner
, synthesizing the corporeal and the technological.

You can view them in person at the Cooley through December 5. Each installation of this work is unique. If you want to get a sense of the movement and you can't make it to the gallery, check out Antoine's site where some QuickTime movies of the work are posted.

Through December 5, 2009

Liminal: An Examination of Graffiti in Tokyo

I recently self-published a 32 page zine that covers the scope of Tokyo street graffiti to coincide with a lecture I did recently for the Artalking series of contemporary art gatherings in Tokyo.

The zine features an illustrated essay in English about Tokyo graffiti while simultaneously operating as a sort of "birdwatching guide" to help readers identify different graffiti writers' work.

Liminal was printed in an edition of 125 and each is hand-numbered. You can pick one up for $12.00 postpaid (shipping included) via Paypal to ian(at)ianlynam.com or email me.

Graffiti Archaeology: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

I totally forgot about this site until I came across it again today... still just as cool. Unearth the archaeology of a variety of graffiti walls, layer by layer over the years.

Art Show at Fresh Pot

About 30 very very affordable works (unearthed from my basement,
mostly), are on sale right now at the Fresh Pot, on Mississippi in
North Portland (4001 N. Mississippi). These cute sailors are taken but more friends remain.

A bunch are works that Olivia Edith Fuente and I made together as
Spirit Palace Studios. More are just slightly mortifying paintings of
my own, from the past, that I just wanted to try to give to a good
home.

They start at $20, and most stop at about $75. Would love it if you
came on down, checked them out, and considered taking a colorful 2-D
baby home...we spend that much on booze, jeans, and brunch sometimes,
why not art? I do custom stuff as well.

Curio-Logical

First Friday in Portland sees Grass Hut having a four artist melee.
Each with their own unique vision, and yet somehow the lines cross quite
well between each of the artists. This will def be a how do they do that
show, with techniques and styles that will baffle ordinary humans, and
entrance the connoisseur to bring the eyeball within inches of the artists
work.

Curio-logicals starring Colin Johnson, Kristin Cammermeyer, Dan May, and
Elizabeth Haidle. Kristin is flying over from the east, and Elizabeth will
be traversing from the coast to be here in person for the opening!

Senate Vote Prohibits Arts Recipients in Economic Stimulus Funding

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) offered a "compromise" amendment which passed the Senate as part of the economic stimulus package. The compromise prohibits arts funding. Now is the time to call your Senators and Representatives to let them know that art creates jobs and helps contribute to creative thinking across all communities. You can send an email via the Americans for the Arts action page.

Post-Graffiti Collage

Poster Boy cuts and pastes ads in the NYC subways. Recently nabbed by the NYPD, Henry Matyjewicz claims to be just one of the individuals involved in the Poster Boy movement. You too can be a Poster Boy. Mix it up. Nice interview at Gothamist.

Obsessive Consumption

I recently discovered the work of Kate Bingaman-Burt, and was surprised (but not too surprised) to find out she lives in Portland, OR, and teaches graphic design at PSU. She draws her daily purchases and they provide a different take on consuming altogether.

Visit Kate's website here.
